IC:

Character name: Kairi
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts (I, II, BBS, basically the whole dang franchise.)
Timeline: After getting separated from Riku and Sora before the final boss of KHII, before returning to the islands.
Age: 15
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:

As a Princess of Heart, Kairi's heart can hold no darkness in it. While she never demonstrates any specific abilities associated with that in the games, she should technically share the other princesses' capacity to sense darkness in some form. Also, if her heart is removed from her body (literally and figuratively), the lack of darkness there means she will never turn into a Heartless.

As a Keyblade wielder, she hasn't had any training at all. She seems to be quick enough on her feet with it for a beginner, and manages to defend herself from several low-level Heartless. With more training, she could gain the same powerful skills as her friends, but at the moment she's mediocre at best. The Keyblade grants its wielder the power to open any lock or door, a skill that Sora mastered fairly quickly, as well as access to attack and healing magic and abilities.

How would they use their abilities?: To help people!! In short. Kairi is a goody-two-shoes like all of her friends and won't hesitate to rush to the aid of someone who's in trouble. Other than that, probably nothing, unless she accidentally locked herself in the bathroom.

Appearance: Kairi is fairly short and slender (shorter than Sora, who's estimated to be a little over the 5' mark) with shoulder-length dark red hair and blue-violet eyes. She wears a short pink dress with three zippers down the front. The middle one is pulled down a bit to reveal the white halter top she's wearing underneath. The strap that loops around the back of her neck has a black hood attached to it. (only Nomura knows why.) Around her waist is a black belt with a loop at each hip, from one of which hangs a black pouch with a purple ribbon, tied in a bow. On her left wrist are three plain bracelets, one blue, one purple, and one white. She also wears a silver teardrop pendant on a black cord, and purple high-top sneakers without socks. The laces are tied in a way that should cause them to fall off every time she takes a step, but they don't. That's the magic of Disney.

Have a pic.

Her Keyblade is called Destiny's Embrace, the handguard on the hilt resembling the curved shape of waves. An extension of one side curls down the length of the "blade" almost like a vine, ending in a splay of colorful flowers that form the "teeth" of the key.

And another pic.

Background/Personality:

Considering many of the concepts in the KH-verse are very literal compared to their figurative meanings in the real world, a little pre-history is in order. The "World", when referred to, is in fact closer to a galaxy or universe, with individual worlds (like planets, but smaller) contained within it. Between them stretches what is called the Sea of Stars, which is essentially space. The stars seen in the sky are the other worlds, which seem to function just fine without a scientifically correct solar system.

Within this universe, two opposing forces permeate more or less every living thing. These are known as "light" and "darkness". They represent not only what their usual meanings do, but also natural forces. Light leans toward brightness, positive emotions, etc, whereas darkness is negative, though they both ultimately have their strengths and weaknesses. Every living being, including each world, has a "heart", which is less a physical organ needed to survive ("Nobodies" are creatures lacking hearts, and "Heartless" are creatures made mostly of hearts, that consume them) and more the spiritual core of a being, containing their will and sense of self. Hearts can contain both light and darkness, usually mixed, or a balance between the two. It is when a heart is pure light or darkness that things start to get strange.

There is a legend that tells of a time where the World was full of light. Those with strong hearts were granted the ability to wield a weapon called the "Keyblade". It could take many forms but most all of them recalled its namesake in one way or another: a key. And a key it was--it could undo any lock, open any door, even the doors to the hearts of the worlds.

The legend goes on to tell how people began to try to claim the "light" as their own, to fight over it, and the fighting eventually escalated into a full-scale conflict. This was known as the Keyblade War. The darkness created from that jealousy and greed swept across and eventually consumed the entire world. It is said that the world in its current state was born from that darkness, from the few fragments of light that survived. The world was rebuilt into separate, smaller worlds, isolated from each other by special barriers that only certain people could cross, in order to prevent such a catastrophe from happening again. The few remaining Keyblade wielders were charged with keeping that balance.

Kairi was born in a world known as Radiant Garden, which was ruled over by a sage-king known as Ansem the Wise. When she is very young, she is out picking flowers when she is attacked by a group of strange monsters known as Unversed. A young woman named Aqua, wielding a Keyblade, comes to her aid. After carrying Kairi to safety, she returns to chase off the monsters with the help of King Mickey, another Keyblade bearer. Once the danger has passed, the little girl returns to thank her benefactors, giving Aqua the bouquet of flowers she was holding. In return, Aqua casts a charm on her necklace, saying that one day when Kairi is in trouble, "the light within you will lead you to the light of another. Someone to keep you safe."

Though it will not become evident until much later, this meeting is a fateful one. Not only because of the charm, but when Kairi, frightened by the monsters, hid behind Aqua, she touched the young woman's Keyblade, and the weapon chose the little girl as its next wielder.

Kairi's grandmother then comes looking for her, and the girl waves goodbye. As they walk away hand in hand, Kairi asks her grandmother to tell her a story, one she's apparently heard many times before. This turns out to be the legend of the Keyblade War, and how the world was rebuilt afterwards.

Some time later, a mysterious young man appears in the center of the city, with no memory of his past aside from his name--Xehanort. He is taken in by Ansem the Wise, and becomes one of the sage's apprentices. He joins the rest of the apprentices in their studies of the heart and darkness, even against their master's orders, but in their quest for knowledge, they go too far. The six of them, Xehanort included--Braig, Ienzo, Even, Aeleus, and Dilan--give themselves up to the darkness. Their hearts swallowed by it, their bodies become beings known as Nobodies--strong wills without hearts, and therefore, emotions. The man who was once Xehanort, who before this had stolen his own master's name, became two--the humanoid Heartless calling himself "Ansem", and "Xemnas", a powerful Nobody and founder of the group known as Organization XIII.

The world of Radiant Garden is plunged into darkness as well, and Xehanort's Heartless sends Kairi off into the Sea of Stars, curious to discover if her heart of pure light has any connection to the Keyblade wielders. But she would have been lost, had the spell Aqua cast on her not done its job. It leaves her on the shore of a world called Destiny Islands, where her arrival is discovered by two young boys her age--Sora and Riku, who are best friends.

Thus, she finds a new home. She settles in to life on the Islands well enough, making fast friends with the two boys, growing up alongside them. The three of them become inseparable, though as they approach their teens, Sora and Riku's friendly rivalry gets a little more intense, as they begin competing over Kairi instead. She either doesn't seem to notice, or doesn't mind, playing judge for their games and races. Riku also begins speaking about traveling to other worlds, and Sora questions Kairi on where she came from, though she tells him she doesn't remember, and that she's happy with her new home. The three of them construct a raft with which they intend sail to other worlds and explore. However, perhaps a little disturbed by Riku's enthusiasm bordering on obsession for this journey, Kairi tells Sora that maybe the two of them should just leave together. She immediately takes it back, seeming a bit shocked by her own words, and tries to laugh it off as a joke. Instead, she says that she was a little nervous initially, but now she's excited to set sail, knowing she can always return to the Islands--her home. Her parting words before returning home for the night are to tell Sora never to change.

Unbeknownst to the two of them, Riku's curiosity has already brought disaster to their world. That night, a storm sweeps the islands, and the three of them head out separately to check on the raft. Sora looks for Kairi, finding the place full of shadowy creatures instead, fighting them off with his newly received Keyblade. He finally makes it to the friends' "Secret Place", their hideout of sorts, and finds Kairi there. She turns to look at him, calling his name, and a strange dark wind picks her up, carrying her towards him. Sora reaches for her, but finds himself grasping at empty air. Kairi has vanished.

Sora is then swallowed by the darkness himself, and ends up in a world called Traverse Town. He believes Kairi has been taken somewhere else, and decides to search for her and Riku alongside his newfound friends, Donald and Goofy. However, little does he know that Kairi's heart is actually within his--a safe place, sheltered from the darkness. Meanwhile, Riku has allied himself with a witch named Maleficent, who has twisted his loyalties with lies and turned him against Sora. He finds Kairi's lifeless body, swearing to get her heart back at any cost, all the while playing directly into the witch's hands--and that of Xehanort's Heartless, who was the one that convinced Riku to open the door and plunge their world into darkness in the first place.

Within Sora's heart, Kairi seems to have a limited consciousness, speaking to him a few times during his journey, though he never quite catches on to why. It is implied she witnesses most of the events through Sora's eyes, and retains the memories of them later to some extent. She points out familiar things, like an old, abandoned house reminding her of their Secret Place.

Eventually Sora's travels take him to the ruins of a castle called Hollow Bastion. Kairi's heart senses something familiar about the place, and with good reason--this crumbling, darkness-ridden world is all that is left of her original home, Radiant Garden. Within the depths of the castle, Maleficent's plan is coming to fruition--by collecting seven girls with hearts of pure light, known as the Princesses of Heart, and using their power to open the Keyhole to the realm of darkness, she intends to use its power to rule all the worlds. However, the Keyhole is incomplete, because one heart is missing--Kairi's.

As Sora fights his way up to the castle, Riku appears before him, saying only the stronger heart can wield the Keyblade, and steals the weapon from his former friend. Sora is disheartened for a bit, then comes to a realization--he doesn't need the Keyblade, as long as he believes in his friends. His heart proves stronger than Riku's, and he takes the weapon back. Frustrated, Riku lets Xehanort's Heartless posses his body with the promise of more power, returning to Maleficent and pointing out the flaw in her plan--Kairi's missing heart. He creates a Keyblade from the six remaining princesses' hearts--one with the power to unlock the heart itself. He turns it on Maleficent, letting the darkness consume her and transform her into a monstrous dragon, which Sora and the gang then defeats.

Sora then stumbles across Kairi's lifeless body, shaking her, trying to wake her up, but to no avail. Xehanort's Heartless, still in Riku's body, approaches and informs him that Kairi's heart has been within Sora's the whole time. The Heartless then introduces himself as "Ansem, Seeker of Darkness", and attacks Sora with the intent of stealing her heart from him. Shocked by these revelations, Sora makes no move to defend himself until Kairi calls from within him, jolting him out of it. They fight, and Sora comes out on top, forcing "Ansem" to retreat for the time being.

Sora then attempts to seal the Keyhole and prevent darkness from spilling out of it, but without it being complete he can't close it, either. He sees the Keyblade Riku/Ansem dropped and realizes what he must do. Smiling at his friends reassuringly, he thrusts it into his chest and unlocks his own heart to release Kairi's, returning it to her body. She wakes up and runs to him, but he disappears.

She calls his name, saying she won't let him go, as "Ansem" emerges again, this time in his true form, a tall man with dark skin and silver-white hair. He tells Kairi she's served her purpose, perhaps intending to attack her, but at that moment, an image of Riku appears in front of him, arms outstretched, holding him back. He yells at Kairi and the others to run, and after a moment of wavering, she nods, apparently deciding to trust in her friend's strength. She heads with Donald and Goofy to the entrance of the castle, where she hesitates again, saying she doesn't want to leave her friends behind. At that moment, a small Heartless appears, and she approaches it, feeling something familiar about it. More of the creatures show up then, intending to attack them, and Kairi puts her arms around the first one, saying "I'll protect you this time!" In a burst of light, Sora is returned to his former self. He hugs her back, thanking her.

The four of them escape back to Traverse Town to regroup. After discussing their next move--Sora needs to return to the castle to seal the Keyhole, stop the darkness from flowing out of it, and bring Riku back--he and Kairi go off alone to talk. She tells him there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, like the story her grandmother used to tell her. He replies that despite searching for her all that time, they were together all along. He says he just needs to find Riku now, and Kairi voices her doubts, worrying that their friend's heart is lost to the darkness forever. Sora reassures her, reminding her of how she brought him back from being a Heartless.

Kairi replies that she didn't want to forget him, and Sora reaffirms their connection. Her response to this is "Well, let's go." She's determined to go with him to save Riku, but he eventually convinces her to stay behind, since she can't exactly fight. In return, she gives him a "lucky charm" made of shells in the shape of a star, making him promise to bring it back to her. Her parting words are "Don't ever forget. Wherever you go, I'm always with you."

Sora leaves to defeat "Ansem" and stop the darkness, leaving Kairi behind in Traverse Town. She waits there until his task is completed, and all the destroyed worlds are restored. Right before she returns to the Islands, she catches a glimpse of Sora, and reaches for him, grabbing his hand. The two exchange a few words as the place collapses around them--Sora promising to return some day, and Kairi affirming she'll wait for him.

However, after her return home, no news comes of Riku or Sora. Days turn into weeks, which turn into months, and Kairi returns to her daily life, going to school and spending time with her other friends. But something is missing, and she knows it. Slowly, her memories of Sora begin to slip away, as the journey he continues on worlds away unravels them. However, she holds onto one thing--that there was a boy she promised to meet again.

One day almost a year later, she is walking home from school when her friend Selphie catches up with her and asks her to go to the island where they all used to play. Kairi declines, asking her if she remembers the boys they used to play with. Selphie can recall Riku, but no one else. Kairi insists there was another boy, but she can't remember his name. She says she promised herself she wouldn't go back to that island until she can remember him properly.

Selphie asks her if she's sure she didn't just make him up, but Kairi collapses suddenly. She hears the voice of a boy calling a name--"Naminé". She responds, saying that's not her name, and tells him it's Kairi. He seems to recognize it, saying "I know you. You're that girl he likes." She begs him for a name in return, and he gives his as "Roxas".

Kairi asks again, this time for "his" name, and very suddenly, she hears Sora's voice, chiding her playfully for forgetting him. "Okay, I guess I can give you a hint. Starts with an 'S!' "

She wakes up lying on the ground with Selphie hovering over her, worried. Kairi reassures her, and then smiles, as if coming to a realization, and dashes off. Her confused friend follows her down to the beach, where she's taking an object out of her school bag--a message in a bottle.

Kairi says she wrote it the day before, to the boy she couldn't remember, and it made her recall the promise they'd made--to meet again someday. She expresses her belief that it will reach him, and tosses the bottle into the ocean, saying his name, finally. "Sora".

Some time later, Kairi is standing on the beach watching the island. Aloud, she says to herself that maybe waiting isn't good enough. As if granting her wish, a man in a black cloak appears before her, introducing himself as "Axel" and saying he knows Sora. He extends a hand to her, as if offering to take her to him. She almost moves to accept the offer, when Pluto, King Mickey's dog, appears, barking, as if trying to warn her. A group of strange monsters appear--Dusks, lesser Nobodies--the bodies left behind from people who have become Heartless.

Axel is clearly controlling them, trying to coerce her to come with him, despite his claims of wanting the same thing she does--to reunite with someone close to him. She retorts that he's not acting very friendly by threatening her, and runs fearlessly into the portal he created, followed by Pluto. Before Axel can catch up with her, she's made it to another world.

It's there, a place called Twilight Town, that she meets a group of friends named Hayner, Pence, and Olette. She tells them she's looking for Sora, and they recognize the name, saying they met him briefly some time ago, and that he said he'd return. Her spirits rise a bit with this revelation, but they are quickly dashed with Axel's reappearance. He grabs Kairi by the arm and drags her with him, calling her gutsy for jumping right into the portal like that. Despite her new friends' best efforts, she's taken away again.

Later Sora hears from Axel that Kairi escaped him once again, but fell into the hands of Organization XIII. She's stuck in a cell with Pluto, waiting, frustrated by her inability to do anything. When she demands to know her captors' motives, she's told that she is the "fire that feeds Sora's anger". Realizing she's being used to manipulate her friend, she grows upset. At that moment, another dark portal appears behind her. She approaches it cautiously to see a girl dressed in white inside, beckoning to her. When she demands the stranger's identity, the girl only says "Believe in yourself". Kairi takes her hand, and they escape with Pluto. Hand in hand, they head for the exit, but are stopped by Saïx, a member of the Organization. He calls the girl in white "Naminé", and Kairi recognizes it as the name that Roxas called her. He then turns to Kairi, offering to take her to Sora, but she shrinks back, saying she certainly does want to see him--but not on their terms.

Suddenly, another figure in the same black cloak appears, defeating Saïx's minions and chasing the Nobody off. Naminé calls the stranger "Riku", and Kairi runs to him, overjoyed to be reunited with her friend again. However, he backs away. She reaches up to take off his hood--and reveals the face of Xehanort's Heartless, "Ansem". After fighting the possession for a long time, Riku has given in in order to use "Ansem"'s power to help Sora behind the scenes, and it changed his appearance. However, Kairi still senses her friend's heart inside that body, and refuses to let him leave her despite his shame.

Kairi hears another familiar voice, then, and looks down over the ledge they're standing on, spotting Sora and his companions. Heartless spring at him, and she rushes to his aid, but they turn on her instead. Riku moves to defend her, taking her arm and handing her a Keyblade--her Keyblade, which she can finally wield. The two of them fight off the creatures as Sora, Donald and Goofy make their way towards them. Reunited at last, Kairi chides Sora for never coming home and making her come look for them, then rushes to hug him. Riku turns to take his leave, and Sora finally notices him. Shocked at his appearance, he says he'll never really be able to forgive "Ansem", but he's grateful for him protecting Kairi. Riku apparently sees this as a dismissal and turns to leave again, but Kairi runs to him, calling him by his name and begging him not to leave, which startles the others.

Kairi takes Sora's hand and joins the three of them, telling him to close his eyes and see the truth for himself. Sora finally recognizes his friend and begins to cry, realizing his long search is finally over. After a bit of friendly teasing, they finally all get down to business. Riku says he can't return to normal while he still needs "Ansem"'s power to fight--to defeat Xemnas, the leader of the Organization, who has been trying to gain power over all the worlds just as his Heartless was. They fight their way upward to King Mickey and DiZ, an old ally of Riku's who happens to be the original Ansem the Wise in disguise.

One by one, Sora defeats the members of the Organization that stand in their way, and as they fall they each call him "Roxas". Confused and upset by this, he demands an explanation, and Riku gives it to him--Roxas is Sora's Nobody. When Sora unlocked his heart to save Kairi, he became a Heartless, and a Nobody was created as well.

With this revelation out of the way, the group continues on, finally reaching Ansem and the King just in time for the device the sage made to foil Xemnas' plans explodes. Ansem disappears in the blast, supposedly for good. (but that's another story...) The explosion also returns Riku to normal (don't ask about that logic) and Sora chides him for trying to do everything on his own, saying he has plenty of friends and gesturing at the others.

They finally make it to Xemnas, his plans more or less in ruins, and he gives a "woe is me" speech that none of the group really buys before teleporting Sora away to fight him alone. Kairi, Riku and the others call for him, worried, but Sora returns victorious. Xemnas retreats to draw power from his creation--an artificial Kingdom Hearts, the Heart of all worlds. They enter the door of the strange new world the Nobody has created, but once inside, Sora and Riku are separated from the rest of the group to fight him alone.

They defeat him after a grueling battle, and the group is reunited again, much to everyone's relief. However, the castle begins to crumble around them, and suddenly a dark portal opens, a familiar ghostly figure in white standing by it. The King, Donald and Goofy don't seem to see her, but accept the offer anyway and run right through. Kairi, however, stops to thank Naminé, who smiles and turns to Sora, saying "We meet again, like we promised."

He stares are her, confused, but then Roxas appears, replying to her. The two of them talk about seeing each other again, and reuniting with their original selves--after all, Naminé is Kairi's Nobody, from when her heart was separated from her body. They finish by saying they'll always be together, as long as Sora and Kairi are together. Naminé then takes Kairi's hand, and fades back into her, Roxas doing the same to Sora.

Kairi then heads for the portal, eager to go home with her friends, but as she reaches it, it begins to close. She turns, calling for Riku and Sora, but it's too late. They didn't make it in time.

And the rest...is history. Or rather, that's her canonpoint.

Kairi, in a word, is complicated. She's friendly and cheerful, but her experiences with kidnapping and, well, darkness have exposed her to the darker sides of people, so she's not naive or totally trusting by any means. However, once she makes a friend, she's relentlessly loyal, as shown in her devotion to Riku even after he's given up on himself. She's determined and possibly even a little reckless, especially when it comes to helping the people she cares about.

While she knows when to be serious, she loves to tease, though she doesn't seem to do it as often as she did when she was younger. It's an expression of affection that seems to be reserved for those closest to her--namely, Sora and Riku.

She has her doubts sometimes as well, and needs reassurance and cheering up just like anyone, but she usually bounces back from any negative feelings quickly. She also shows responsibility and organization back when the three of them were gathering supplies for their raft. But her most remarkable quality is probably her determination. It's what allowed her to wait so patiently for Sora, and to hold on to her memory of him when everyone else had forgotten him completely. She doesn't question her own abilities when one of her friends is in trouble--she'll just run right into danger for them and do whatever she can. And waiting for so long brought her to the realization that being active is better than nothing, so she's a lot less likely to sit around even if a situation seems hopeless.

Have you read up on how the game works?: Yep! The Guide plugin is called the Flaming Ferret, and some ways to earn your keep are doing monthly missions, mooching off a friend, and stealing (which she will never do, though, because Disney values!!)

1st person sample:

[the first thing the Guide shows when it turns on is...pink. An annoyed female voice can be heard, slightly muffled, and in mid sentence.]

--me where my friends are! I filled out all the papers, is it really too much to ask?

[at the grumble of dissent in response, there's a sharp bark. The video shifts to show the ceiling and the face of a teenage girl with red hair, apparently holding it on top of something else in her arms. Peering at something down past it, her expression switches from frustration to concern.]

It's okay, Pluto. We'll find them again, don't worry. [she looks up again.] Look, all I want to know is if you've seen a few people or not. A boy with spiky hair, and--

Form 678-b.

...um, sorry?

[another piece of paper is thrust at her, and she shifts the load she's carrying, nearly dropping it in order to take it. She scans it quickly, the annoyed expression returning.]

What--I need to fill out a form to request the form that lets me submit a request for missing persons--this is ridiculous! How long will it even take?

Three months for processing--

They might be in danger! I need to find them now!

[another paper comes out of seemingly nowhere, and she snatches it out of the air with difficulty. More barking from below the Guide.]

A form for the speedier processing of forms--ahh!

[there's a shower of delightful rainbow colors as the Guide clatters to the floor. A floor now littered with the stack of papers the girl was carrying. She sits there for a moment, taking a deep breath, looking very much like she wants to cry. But she doesn't. She sets her jaw--and shouts at the top of her lungs.]

Sora! Riku! Your Majesty! Donald, Goofy! If you're here, answer me!

[a three-second hush falls over Arrivals...then the noise starts up again. She hasn't killed anyone, so her outburst apparently counts as nothing interesting. The girl waits for a moment, before shaking her head, and starts gathering up all those papers with determination.]

I won't give up...but I won't wait around, either. Not this time.

3rd person sample:

A book, and a towel. Kairi sits down on the bed in her new, tiny room, with these two things on her lap. The towel is sort of nice, she admits to herself. It matches her dress, with seashell embroidery bordering each end. But all of this is just so absurd, after everything she's witnessed. Not the ship, or the aliens--some of her best friends are talking animals, after all. She doesn't judge by looks. She's traveled across worlds and seen all sorts of things, but now she's been told it's gone. All of it.

She leans to the side and lets her temple rest against the cold, smooth wall. It's happened before--worlds being destroyed. Sora brought them back. Who would have thought, a goofball like her friend becoming a hero? Riku was always responsible one.

But Sora always had the heart for it, didn't he.

Kairi smiles faintly to herself, the surface she's resting against soothing her slight headache. Her hands still feel a bit cramped, too, from all that writing. She was so close...she'd touched them, hugged them. Her friends. They were together for a few glorious moments, and now they're apart again.

It's tiring, it's frustrating--it makes her want to scream, but she got the screaming done in Arrivals, and she knew any more would just be a waste of energy. A brief rest, to learn about her surroundings. And then--

There's a skittering noise at the door, which protests loudly, and the girl straightens up and sighs. "It's just Pluto. Could you let him in, please?" Talking doors--another thing that doesn't exactly phase her. People come in all sorts of forms. Even door-shaped ones, apparently. The dog barrels into the room, running around in a circle and barking, before placing both front paws on Kairi's knees and staring up at her, tongue hanging out. She smiles and scratches behind his ears. Her one reliable companion. He found her--Sora, when she was still within him--and came back to find her again and again.

The dog seems pleased by the attention, but whines a bit, and Kairi nods. She knows. The people they both miss so much are somewhere out there, and she's going to find them again.

"It'll be okay, boy. We just need to keep believing." But not by sitting here and moping. If the creatures at Arrivals won't help, she'll have to go around the ship and ask, won't she? Her friends aren't exactly easy to miss.

Her expression is set. First things first--finding out what the book is for.

Questions?: Can Kairi bring Pluto with her as a pet?
